objects that do not provide mapping protocol, this is equivalent to the Python

<p class="versionchanged">
<span class="versionmodified">Changed in version 2.5: </span>These functions returned an <tt class="xref c c-type docutils literal"><span class="pre">int</span></tt> type. This might require
changes in your code for properly supporting 64-bit systems.</p>
